Glycemic Variability
TL;DR
Glycemic variability is the degree of glucose fluctuation across the day, not just the average glucose level. Rapid swings can be more biologically disruptive than a stable but slightly higher glucose baseline.
Why it matters for Vitals
- higher variability can suppress HRV and elevate resting heart rate
- it can worsen sleep continuity when excursions happen late in the day or overnight
- it helps explain recovery noise that fasting glucose or HbA1c can miss
Useful framing
- low variability = steadier metabolic control
- high variability = more autonomic and endothelial stress
