Glycemic Variability

TL;DR

Glycemic variability is the degree of glucose fluctuation across the day, not just the average glucose level. Rapid swings can be more biologically disruptive than a stable but slightly higher glucose baseline.

Why it matters for Vitals

  • higher variability can suppress HRV and elevate resting heart rate
  • it can worsen sleep continuity when excursions happen late in the day or overnight
  • it helps explain recovery noise that fasting glucose or HbA1c can miss

Useful framing

  • low variability = steadier metabolic control
  • high variability = more autonomic and endothelial stress
